Mammoth Marathon still .png

It is with disappointment the Council has taken the decision to cancel the Mammoth Marathon, which was due to take place in May 2023.

Mammoth Marathon’s inaugural race was successfully held in 2022 after successive COVID lockdowns and was one of very few large-scale sporting events in the district.

The number of running events since the COVID pandemic has increased, leading to many more competing events of this nature being organised for 2023 in East Anglia generally, and Norfolk specifically.

The number of runners signing up for this year’s event has been much lower than anticipated.

The Council shares the disappointment that runners who had signed up to the event, and supporters of the Mammoth Marathon, will feel towards this news but believes the only sensible option at this stage is to cancel the event, giving participants as much notice as possible.

Runners who have signed up to take part have been contacted, to apologise and offer them a full refund on their entry fee.

Cllr. Virginia Gay, portfolio holder for Leisure, Wellbeing and Culture said:

“It is a great shame that we have had to cancel the upcoming Mammoth Marathon, which is unfortunate, but a decision we must take.

The events landscape in Norfolk is very rich with opportunities to take part in competitive or recreational activities such as organised runs, and we have not seen the take up in participants that we would have liked.

Contrastingly, I am delighted that North Norfolk is host to such a variety of activities and events for residents and visitors to partake in – sports and leisure are key to our quality of life.

We look forward to bringing more events to our wonderful district in the future, such as an entry-level triathlon planned for later this year.”

The Council is committed to providing a wide variety of physical activity opportunities across the district and considers sports and leisure a key offering for residents. State-of-the-art and accessible facilities are an essential provision for health and wellbeing.

The Council has facilities across North Norfolk, operated by leisure provider Everyone Active and has also partnered with Active Norfolk to develop a targeted physical activity action plan.
