North Norfolk District Council has become a Climate Literate Organisation, having been awarded Bronze level accreditation by the Carbon Literacy Project.

Staff and Councillors have undertaken Carbon Literacy training, relevant climate change learning that encourages action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This expert training helps people acquire the knowledge and skills to lower both their personal carbon footprint and that of the organisation they work for.  As well as taking part in interactive training, staff and Councillors have made individual pledges on how they can reduce their impact on the environment while carrying out Council work, or in future strategic decisions.

Cllr. Adam Varley, portfolio holder for Climate Change & Net Zero said:

I’m really pleased that NNDC has been awarded this bronze status, showcasing all the work which has been undertaken. Our Climate Projects Officer has done a fantastic job in delivering this specialized, bespoke training package by the Climate Literacy Project and I thank all the staff and members for taking the time to engage with this.

As a council, each decision we make must have climate change at its heart and this training gives both officers and councillors the relevant knowledge and skillset to ensure that we are making good proactive decisions, ensuring that we strive towards net zero.

Since declaring a climate emergency in 2019, the Council has been working towards a Net Zero future by decarbonising its estate through improving the energy efficiency of its assets and generating its own renewable energy.

Recent infrastructural upgrades to the Council’s estate to improve energy generation has involved installing solar Victory Leisure Centre, saving over 35 tonnes of CO2 each year.
