Under the Habitat Regulations the Council must demonstrate that its Local Plan proposals will not have a significant adverse effect on sites designated under European legislation for their wildlife importance.

Where potential significant negative effects are identified, alternative options should be examined to avoid any potential damaging effects.

This requirement is met in two parts: A Scoping Report has been prepared to identify the issues which should be considered such as visitor pressures, water pollution, or loss of habitat. An Appropriate Assessment will be undertaken at a later stage to consider how the Local Plan proposals and policies might impact on the issues identified in the Scoping Report.
